The Rock Island School District is proud of the acomplishments of our students and staff! In this section of our web site you'll read about student activities, honors awarded to staff and students, and interesting stories involving the Rock Island Schools. Visit often and you'll see why the Rock Island School District is the home of "Rocky Pride!"

January 16 - Horace Mann students outsmart college kids on Revolutionary War - Sometimes college students aren't as smart as third- and fourth-graders. At least, not when it comes to the Revolutionary War.  Eight college students from the University of Illinois, Black Hawk College and the University of Iowa competed against Ann Cottay's third- and fourth-graders at Horace Mann Elementary Thursday.

January 19 - `Ring'master - Like many others, Donna Beeding was on hand for the premiere of ``The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.'' When a movie takes in $34.1 million on its opening day, it's obvious that many people were there to see it.  Unlike most, however, Ms. Beeding went the extra mile for the premiere, traveling halfway across the globe for it.

January 20 - King Center honors MLK by honoring those who serve - The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was honored Monday at the Rock Island center that bears his name by honoring those who continue social activism locally.

January 22 - Family Fun Night  - Family Fun Night has been postponed due to the weather.

January 24 - Reception will honor R.I.-Milan teachers, program - A reception to honor the Rock Island-Milan School District's Adopt-A-School partners and two teachers will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the high school library.

January 25 - District 41 seeks public input on impending budget deficit - A letter from Dr. Markward.

January 25 - `He just wants to be like all of the other kids' - On a wrestling mat, there's no way Perry Scott Jr. would boast of being able to whip the competition with one arm tied behind his back.  He would, however, accept the challenge with one arm.  PJ, as he is called, is a 9-year-old fourth-grader at Frances Willard School in Rock Island.

January 27 - R.I.-Milan schools to express disagreement with NCLB Act - The Rock Island-Milan School Board will vote at tonight's meeting on a resolution asking Congress to change the controversial No Child Left Behind Act.

January 27 - Letter: Thanks for great piece on Revoluntary War contest

January 27 - Many parents see benefits with using Classroom Cubed - Parents chatted about the Earth's layers with Edison Junior High science teacher Bill Greathouse.  About 30 parents from Edison joined him and Edison math specialist Susan Neece at the school recently to watch a Classroom Cubed presentation. Some students already had spent part of the day learning lessons from Classroom Cubed.

January 29 - ROTC cadets share their views of serving their country -  In the halls of Rock Island High School, ROTC Air Force cadets march to the lead of senior Sarah Anne Schrock, 18. On July 14, Ms. Schrock, after graduating from high school, will join the Army.  In the meantime, she and other cadets wear the ``Air Force Junior ROTC,'' patch on their shoulder.

January 30 - Edison Math Lab - Edison Junior High math specialist/teacher, Susan Neece, left, helps eighth-grader D'Angelo Allison put together an icosehedron with a polyhedron kit during an eighth-grade math lab at the Rock Island school recently.

January 31 - Trinity grant benefits Moline, R.I. students - A grant from Trinity Regional Health System should help teach Rocky and Moline High School students how to live a healthier life.

February 1 - Plan for big Seuss party - If you haven't planned your celebration for Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2, you might consider some of these ideas.

February 2 - Rock Island's Heriford balancing school and hockey - For athletes, balancing classes and practices can be a tough task. However, there are a lot who can succeed in both the classroom and on the field. For one Rock Island junior, it's been tough, but he has found the key to success.  Brandon Heriford is a 16-year-old junior at Rock Island High School. Between tennis, school, and his passion, ice hockey, Brandon manages to keep his education on the top of his priority list.
